Despite strict gun laws, Chicago’s soaring violence claims life of 32-year old mother.
CHICAGO–A 32-year old mother was gunned down Friday, caught in a crossfire, as she pushed her newborn infant in a stroller down a street on Chicago’s Southside.
The victim, 32-year old Nykea Aldridge, was a mother of four and the cousin of Chicago Bulls’ player Dwyane Wade.
Authorities say she was walking with a man when two men approached and someone began firing at the man.
Aldridge was hit in the head and the arm and taken to Stroger Hospital, where she died, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The baby was not hurt, and a relative came to the scene and took the child, police said.
“(She was a) Christian woman, a loving mother and somebody who aspired to make a life for herself and her family,” said the Rev. Edward Jones Sr., a spokesman for the family.
Three other people were killed and at least 18 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday afternoon, police said.
In Chicago, which already has strict gun laws, homicides are up 45 percent this year.
My cousin was killed today in Chicago. Another act of senseless gun violence. 4 kids lost their mom for NO REASON. Unreal. #EnoughIsEnough
